Paw Protect is administered by Embrace Pet Insurance, which is a well known pet insurance brand with over 500,000 pets insured.
The difference between Paw Protect and Embrace though is one major, MAJOR thing – Paw Protect doesn’t require you to pay large vet bills upfront. Here’s how it works:
Your pet starts limping and you take them to the vet, where they’re diagnosed with needing a $6,500 surgery.
Unlike other insurers, where you have to pay the vet bill upfront out of your own pocket, with Paw Protect when your pet has their treatment and you’re presented with the veterinary invoice, you’ll give the Paw Protect claims team a call 24/7 and the claim will be reviewed in real-time. Once approved, they’ll pay their share of the claim (less your selected out-of-pocket expenses) immediately using their InstantPay solution.
So, if you’d struggle to pay a large vet bill upfront, then worry no more.

Pets Best has long been a favorite of ours due to its value-for-money proposition. For almost all pets, Pets Best is right at the top when it comes to how well its priced competitively.
While it does offer cheaper plans that you can see when you click through to the Pets Best website, we display the ‘Elite” plan, which also includes vet exam fees and alternative therapies, such as acupuncture and hydrotherapy.
As a bonus, if you also have a CareCredit card, you can use this to pay your vet bill instead of paying with your savings, and Pets Best will reimburse this card directly.

Trupanion offers one simple pet insurance plan, that’ll cover any accident & new illness. There are no financial caps with the plan, and you have a fixed 10% copay for all claims, plus a lifetime per-incident deductible (flexible to your budget), meaning you’ll only pay a deductible once for each condition your pet has during its lifetime.
Trupanion is unique in offering its VetDirect Pay™ service, meaning that instead of paying the vet bill up front and waiting to be reimbursed, Trupanion can pay your vet directly at checkout.
The way Trupanion pricing works is that it’ll never put pricing up just because your pet gets older. So, if you sign your pet up aged 1 they’ll always be priced as a 1 year old.

Pumpkin
Very Good 4.5
- Full coverage plan with flexible coverages according to your budget
- Vet exam fee & behavioral conditions included at no extra cost
- No extended wait period for any condition
- Pays for your pet to have a microchip fitted
- Multi-pet discounts available
Very Good 4.5
The Pumpkin plan, while a good choice for most pets, really comes into its own if you have a pet that develops a condition requiring a special diet such as prescription pet food and supplements. Unlike most providers, Pumpkin offers this coverage as standard for the lifetime of your pet.
We would really recommend Pumpkin if your pet is older, due to its standard inclusion of alternative therapies such as chiropractic treatments, acupuncture and hydrotherapy, which large breeds such as Labs and German Shepherds can often use later on in life as they develop hip and other joint issues.
When it comes to say farewell, the Pumpkin plan also covers end-of-life expenses such as euthanasia, cremation and burial.

Healthy Paws is one of the oldest pet insurance providers in the USA and insures around 625,000 pets per year.
There is one level of annual coverage – unlimited- which means even the most expensive vet bills are covered.
Claims are usually paid very quickly with Healthy Paws – typically within 24 hours.
We would recommend Healthy Paws for younger pets, as the coverage is reduced if you start coverage when your pet is 4 or older.
Lemonade
Good 4.0
- Select from $5,000 - $100,000 annual coverage for accidents and illness
- Optional routine wellness plan for regular preventative care
- Multi-pet and bundle discounts available
- Annual deductibles from $100
- Very competitive pricing
Good 4.0
The Lemonade plan is usually very competitively priced, although there are some items which can increase the monthly cost, such as vet exam fees, behavioral therapy, dental illness and prescription meds.
There are a number of annual coverage options available, from $5,000 to $100,000 and you can change the coverage every anniversary of your pet’s plan. This is ideal as your pet ages, and you may choose a higher coverage to protect against the most expensive conditions such as hip dysplasia and cancer.
Lemonade also offers a routine wellness plan for your pet’s regular preventative needs.
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance
Good 4.0
- Complete coverage plan for accidents, illness & optional routine wellness
- Also includes dental disease coverage for no extra cost
- Alternative therapies including acupuncture & chiropractic care covered
- Generous multi-pet discounts
- Use any vet in the USA or Canada
Good 4.0
The ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plan is the same policy offered by Spot Pet Insurance, but the reason it scores lower is due to the different annual coverage deductible choices.
If you’re ok with having a $10,000 per year annual coverage amount, which will cover all but the most expensive treatments, then we recommend this plan due to its excellent coverage for accidents, illness, including dental disease, and alternative therapy inclusion which covers chiropractic treatments, acupuncture and hydrotherapy.
The ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plan also includes vet exam fees as standard, whereas some other providers charge extra for this coverage.
Figo
Good 4.0
- Covers any new accident or illness
- Unique option of having a 0% copay
- Optional coverage for routine wellness
- Use ANY licensed vet in the world
- Select annual coverage from $5,000 to unlimited
Good 4.0
The Figo plan is an interesting one. On the face of it, it’s a little more expensive than plans from some other providers, but it does have one very nice exclusive perk – it’s the only plan in the USA to offer a 0% copay option, meaning that once you’ve paid your deductible, 100% of the claim will be paid. This is ideal if you’re on a strict budget and want to know exactly what you’ll be paying.
Figo also offers a number of good choices for routine wellness, to cover your pet’s regular preventative care.
